GOP Representative Walter Jones (NC), offered his opinion on federal grant that was awarded to a New Bern, NC, library that was earmarked to expand their collection of information regarding Muslim culture.


According to a reports filed by ThinkProgress, the National Endowment for Humanities grant was given to Craven Community College for the purpose of providing more materials to students who are interested in studying the various cultures surrounding Islam. The grant money is enough for the school to purchase twenty five books, along with a DVD.


Representative Jones is not happy about this happening in his district, and made statements in a local news station, WITN, that the grant money is 'unfairly benefiting Muslims and harming Christians.'


He stated in the interview,


“I want to treat it fairly and I think too many times the Christian faith is not treated fairly. If they want to have book about the Muslim’s faith, let’s have equal number of books about Judeo-Christian [faith].”


Jones said he doesn't have anything against Muslims, and that he has Muslim friends. He named a Minnesota man named Keith Ellison as his Muslim friend.


According to WITn, Jones made a request to a local Christian organizationto provide the college with an equal amount of Christian items, stating it would 'offset the new Muslim culture books.'


The report cites a comment made by Judy Eurich, the Director of Marketing, Communications and Development Liaison at Craven Community College, who stated,


"Anytime we have an opportunity to apply for a grant that’s going to either give us money or resources to enhance our library collection, that’s an important resource to us.”
